WMRMYC Inc JL Sullivan Memorial Trophy, Manly - 22nd October 2017

jlsSMEleven competitors lined up in the Manly Marina at 9am, to battle for the J L Sullivan memorial Trophy.
A beautiful sunny morning. However it was a drifter.
John Gower, the defending champion, had an air of confidence about him as he rigged his new V10.
The wind was very variable in direction and very light. We waited for the breeze to settle and eventually a triangular course was set.
Racing got under way with the wind swinging between south and south west ranging from zero to 5knots.
Ray got off to a great start and won the first race in his newly acquired boat. Dennis won the second race and then graciously took over the role of PRO for the remainder of the event.
Russell who was at the back of the fleet for the first 2 races won the third race. He got lucky with a few wing shifts!
Race 4 was won by Tony and it looked like he had his boat going well. Scott was second in race 4 and then had a big win in race 5. We took a break after race 5 hoping that the wind would settle in direction. Scott was the leader at the break and Mike was threatening with consistent top places thus far.
The wind filled in from the East during the break and a sausage course was set...
After the break Arco was quick from the start and won the sixth race, with Ray second and John third. Russell found some extra boat speed and won the seventh race. Arco won the eighth race Jimmy sailed very well after the break winning races nine and ten.
John, the defending champion, also sailed well after the break and was always at the top end of the fleet. He won race 11. The early leader, Scott, dropped out of contention and the leader board showed Russell, Jimmy and John in the top 3. Russell got more lucky wind shifts and won the last race.
The overall placings were Russell first, John second and Jimmy third. Mike sailed well all day but could not match the first three and came in forth. Dale and Andrew battled hard all day.
The racing was followed by a sausage sizzle and presentation to the winners.
